STUDENT HOUSING PROJECT (AMSTERDAM) Research Paper
STUDENT HOUSING PROJECT (AMSTERDAM) - Research Paper Example g difficulty faced by students from the two main universities in Amsterdam by transfiguring the containers into apartments that accommodate thousands of students. Apparently, Keetwonen, the biggest container city, was created through an initiative closely backed by the Tempohousing contractors. The development created a new experience and lifestyle for students who flock the universities each year. The universities seldom provide accommodation for students while the strict Netherlands rent control system which requires that that private, non-profit housing conglomerates including Stichting DuWo and DeKey be accountable for renting houses to students in a bid to protect them from paying high rents, thus making it hard to cure the accommodation challenge (Kimberley 1). The projectââ¬â¢s actual stacking speed was virtually 20 units daily, which goes into the record as the fastest constructed units. The project developer, Quinten De Gooijer, found square building designs to be ideal particularly when containers are used due to the superfluous structural veracity they offer. Architects added a special feature to the exterior of the units by fixing green tubes that hang as curtains that serve the decorative function (Caroline 55). Moreover, there are concrete pavements that were included to create a desirable atmosphere for students as well as improve the siteââ¬â¢s persistence. In one of the floors, there is a central installation point that supplies natural gas used in heating the units. Initially, people feared that the units would be too hot, cold, noisy or small. However, they later realized that their fears were unsubstantiated after the units turned out to be well insulated, unobtrusive and spacious enough to offer value for the studentsââ¬â¢ money (Skaeve 1). Additionally, they contain exceptional facilities including detached sleeping and studying chambers, persona l kitchen (with a sink and stove), balcony, bathroom, a programmed ventilation system with capricious

Final Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Final - Personal Statement Example The employees got a chance to know each other better while they shared food in those short breaks. There are many theories of motivation that can be used to increase employee performance. Three theories of motivation that can help increase employee performance are Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs, equity theory, and expectancy theory. Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs is based on a pyramid that ranks the five most important needs of workers. The five needs in order of important from least to most important are physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. By identifying the needs that drive each employee a manager can better find the things that motivate each of his employees. Equity theory was developed by John Stacey Adam in 1963. Equity theory states that, ââ¬Å"when people feel fairly or advantageously treated they are more likely to be motivated; when they feel unfairly treated they are highly prone to feelings of disaffection and demotivationâ⬠(Yourcoach, 2010). Eliminating income discrepancies among workers with similar work experience and educat ional credentials is a great way to motivate workers since the staff will feel they are equally valued. Vroomââ¬â¢s expectancy theory is based on the assumption that motivation is associated with the belief of the employee in regards to effort and performance considerations. I was in the middle of an ethical dilemma a few years ago due to misbehavior by my supervisor. There was a promotion in the firm and several in-house candidates applied for the position including myself. A rumor surged that the son in law of one of the executives was going to get the job due to preferential treatment based on family connections. The supervisor denied the rumor, but at the end of the day he gave in to political pressures within the firm and gave the job to the son in law of the manager. I did not like the lack of ethics illustrated by this firm. When my contract expired I stopped working for that firm. In the

Marketing analysis Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Marketing analysis - Case Study Example The strength of the company is the exclusivity it provides through its garments. There is a prestige tag attached to the apparels it makes and that become the ââ¬Ëwantââ¬â¢ quotient for the customer. The high pricing is justified because of this prestige factor. The strength of the company also lies in the styles they have created, excellent service to the customer, wide range of sizes, colours and patterns available all come with the prestige factor. The weakness for True religion jeans comes from the marketing strategy implemented. For an average consumer the pricing is too high and the premium market cannot be predictably loyal. Additionally with launching of various apparel ranges like, swimwear, footwear etc. there could be a diversion from its core brand. According to International forum for cotton promotion the jeans market worldwide is grew from US$52 billion in 2007 to US $56 billion by 2014. North Americans have proved to be number one consumers of jeans having maximu m pairs of jeans in their wardrobes. Astonishingly the share of premium jeans is also significant. Even if it may look as mere 2 % of the total market the figures range very high as the basic market is of higher demand. Hence opportunity in the external environment is significant for the company. The threat to the company comes from the increasing share of other manufacturerââ¬â¢s in premium denim wear. ... Considering the analysis above it is a very wise strategy implemented by the company to market the jeans as a premium segment. The premium market share is growing at a significant rate. The organization is mainly counting on the attitude of the customers which says that as long as the garment delivers style and fit, the price for the same holds less importance. Promoting it through television and movie stars is another clever strategy as it instantly adds to the appeal of the jeans. The strategy also specifies that it is worth to pay a few extra as good quality comes with good pricing. Here the product promotion strategy is based on premium value for the money paid. The brand promotion is based on celebrity endorsements. The marketing strategy is based on the study of consumer of jeans and very well supported by services offered. Retail experience for a customer is memorable with good service offered across the counter. To add to it the customer is not sent away by non-availability o f the merchandise. So a customer when walks in is sure to get a memorable experience through wide range of merchandise, helping attitude of the staff and a great style and fit offered in variety of colours and patterns. This builds a strong foundation of customer relationship and makes the customer come back for more. Although the customer would want to come back for more satisfactory shopping experience, the market segment for the organization needs to expand. The current segment takes care of market which is fashion conscious and would not mind spending money to make a style statement. However as stated earlier this segment is also not very brand loyal and is more likely to switch at the first alternative available. In such case

Energy Conversion System Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Energy Conversion System - Assignment Example (a) Determine the non-dimensional expressions and . [8 marks] Solution: There are 6 variables involved in the problem: velocity , density , viscosity , surface tension , diameter is and acceleration . Choose the three recurring variables: velocity , density and diameter . From Buckingham pi theorem we have non-dimensional groups. The choice of velocity , density and diameter as the repeating variables satisfies: They are measurable, good design parameters and in combination, contain all the dimension and . We form the three groups according to the 2nd theorem. As the groups are all dimensionless, there must have dimensions such as: , we can use the principle of dimensional homogeneity to equate the dimensions for each group. For the first group, In terms of dimensions, we have that: Thus, we have the following linear system: For For For The solutions for is given as: Giving as And a similar procedure is followed for the other groups. Thus, we have the following linear system: For For For The solutions for is given as: Giving as Finally the group: Thus, we have the following linear system: For For For The solutions for is given as: Giving as Thus the problem may be described by the following function of three non-dimensional groups, We take into account that any dimensionless group may be raised to any power and it is still a valid group. Furthermore, the reciprocal of any dimensionless group is valid, too. We concluded that: Finally the non-dimensional expressions and are: Pay attention that the group obeys manipulation rules of equivalence. Remember that: Velocity : Density : Viscosity : Surface tension : Distance : Acceleration : [] (b) Comment on the physical significance of the non-dimensional numbers formed. [6 marks] Solution: The non-dimensional expressions found for and were: The non-dimensional number given by: is the so-called Reynolds number: The Reynolds number is a non-dimensional number that gives a measure of the ratio of inertia force to viscous force. This parameter correlates the viscous behavior of all Newtonian fluids. In fluid dynamic engineer should do estimate of the Reynolds number range of the flow under study. Very low indicates viscous creeping motion, where inertia effects are negligible. Moderate implies a smoothly varying laminar flow. High probably spells turbulent flow, which is slowly varying in the time-mean but has superimposed strong random high-frequency fluctuations. The non-dimensional number given by: is the so-called Weber number: It is a non-dimensional number useful for analyzing fluid flows where there is an interface between two different fluids. The Weber number is the ratio between the inertial force and the surface tension force. Since the Weber number represents an index of the inertial force to the surface tension force acting on a fluid element, it can be useful analyzing thin films flows and the formation of droplets and bubbles. Question 2 (a) Two vessels are connected by a pipe in whic h there is a valve. One vessel of contains nitrogen at and , and the other of contains helium at and . What music means to me. Rock Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
What music means to me. Rock - Essay Example 27). I believe this is a thoroughly accurate and insightful comment about the role that music plays in the human experience. If we look around to the different periods and different cultures of the world throughout humankindââ¬â¢s history, we see music as one of the few timeless facts of existence. Music is touching, as Mr. Joel says, because it expresses the inexpressible. In other words, it allows us to connect to concepts, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and the knowledge of other people, just by the simple act of listening. Going from the beginning of my life to the present moment, I can think quite clearly of the defining soundtrack to that progression of events. Starting in the mid- to late-1970s, which was during my childhood years, I can recall bits and pieces of my favorite music. I know that classics like ââ¬Å"Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeerâ⬠and other Christmas songs were still very much popular. More generally, however, I remember Schoolhouse Rock! very vividly be ing a big hit at my school and with my parents. Schoolhouse Rock! was a television program that had a number of hit musical recordings for children. I think that the social aspect of Schoolhouse Rock! helps me remember so much about it, partly because it was so incredibly popular with kids my age. I preferred ââ¬Å"Science Rockâ⬠the most, probably because it reflected my young interest in the sciences, particularly space and physics. It would make me feel happy about my love of learning as a young kid in physics class. Also from my childhood, I remember loving Mister Rogers Neighborhood and the songs he would sing to his television audience. His voice is iconic of my time as a young child growing up in front of the television. In my adolescence, between 1984 and 1991, my taste in music started to be influenced by my family and friends. In 1984, at 11, Stevie Wonder was my favorite performer. His song ââ¬Å"I Just Called to Say I Love Youâ⬠struck me for Stevieââ¬â¢s great singing ability and skill as an instrumentalist and lyricist. At about 13, I began to like the music that my friends liked. In 1987, I remember Guns Nââ¬â¢ Rosesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Welcome to the Jungleâ⬠being extremely popular, along with U2ââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"With or Without Youâ⬠. Listening to this music helped me feel connected with others, just like the childrenââ¬â¢s music of the 1970s had the decade before. Nevertheless, this new style of rock music that was emerging did give me an element of rebelliousness that pop music from singers like Whitney Houston and Rick Astley lacked. Accordingly, I tended to like the heavier rock more. My taste for heavy rock continued in that direction for much of the remainder of the 1980s. I bought tape cassettes from Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, and Whitesnake, all of whom really represented the youth of that time. In line with Billy Joelââ¬â¢s insight, I think the music I listened to helped give me a point of contact with other young people at that time. Moving away from the 1980s and toward today, I no longer associate hard rock or metal with comfort. Rather, I find comfort in contemporary R&B music. ââ¬Å"R&Bâ⬠stands for ââ¬Å"rhythm and bluesâ⬠, and refers to music that combines elements of hip-hop, soul, and funk (George, 2003, p. 23). Contemporary R&B is polished with saxophone sounds, drum machine rhythms, and talented vocalists. In terms of finding comfort in music, I usually turn to voices like Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, and Jamie Foxx, who all represent that genre of music. When I am feeling disappointment or stress, this music helps me put my problems into perspective. Because much R&B music deals with grander problems, it helps me realize that some of the challenges I face do not compare in size and scope with those being sung about in R&B music.

The Internet And Its Effects On College Students Essay Example for Free
The Internet And Its Effects On College Students Essay The internet is one of the most important inventions of the twentieth century and can be a very useful and productive tool. On the other hand the internet is also designed with entertainment in mind and can be a tremendous waster of time. College Students as a group have greater access to high speed internet connections than any other group. Therefore the use or misuse of the internet can be a very important issue in the education of a college student. Never before has a person had access to as much information as you have with the internet. A person has the ability to research without going to the library, as almost every library has a website which you can use to research. In addition to the websites of libraries search engines make it easy to find web pages on whatever topic you need information on. Many news organizations also have websites which you can use to view current events and current issues of the newspapers and also archived issues of the newspaper. The internet has also become and important and vital part of education. Three of the four classes that I am taking this quarter use the internet as an integral part of the course. In my physics class all the homework is done on an internet system called webassign. You submit the homework on the internet and it gives you your grade immediately and also tells you all the problems you got wrong and all the problems you got right. Another course that makes use of the internet is my computer science class. You use the internet to do the labs for the class and can also get notes for the class on the computer science site. My calculus teacher also uses the internet and has a website that she uses extensively during class. She posts the answers to the homework questions on her website and during class she uses the projector hooked up to her computer to view the website. She also posts grades on the site and you can download practice tests and quizzes. Also at the beginning of all my classes this quarter the teacher gave out his or her e-mail address. As with all things in life there is also a downside to the internet. College students in particular can be affected by the negative aspects of theà internet. Some students can become addicted to the internet and to internet based applications like instant messaging and chat rooms. This can become a problem when the time a student spends online starts to interfere with his or her schoolwork and grades. I know from personal experience how time consuming the internet can be. I regularly spend a few hours a day viewing web pages or using internet based applications on my computer. Another aspect of the internet that can be a tremendous waster of time is computer games that use the internet. I know that this is an issue for many people here at R.I.T. My R.A. told all the people on my floor of stories about people who actually flunked out in their first year because they neglected their work to play computer games. Never before have college students had such a powerful tool to aid them in research and in their overall education. The internet is also a breakthrough in communication and entertainment and can be used in a way that hinders your education. In conclusion the positive aspects of the internet in my opinion far outweigh the negatives.
